Build a focused chatbot for a realistic business or academy use case. Start with conversation design and a no-code prototype, then explore how APIs and retrieval-based knowledge help a chatbot respond from supplied information. The emphasis is on useful, testable answers and clear limits.
What you will learn
- Define a chatbot’s audience, scope, knowledge sources and fallback behaviour.
- Organise an FAQ knowledge base and understand retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
- Create a working prototype and test normal, unclear and unsupported questions.
- Plan human handoff, privacy, access and ongoing maintenance.
Planned course syllabus
- Chatbot foundations and scope: Compare a scripted FAQ bot, an AI assistant and an agent; select a manageable use case and success criteria.
- Conversation design: Design welcome messages, clarifying questions, escalation and useful replies in English or Roman Urdu.
- Knowledge-base preparation: Clean source documents, organise FAQs and remove private information from practice data.
- Grounded answers and retrieval: Explore chunks, search, source references and RAG; teach the bot to admit when the supplied information is insufficient.
- Building a prototype: Create a small no-code chatbot and introduce API requests, configuration and secure handling of keys.
- Tools and website integration: Plan a website chat interface, simple permitted actions and human handoff using a practice environment.
- Evaluation and safeguards: Test incorrect assumptions, prompt injection, unsupported questions, sensitive data and cost or usage limits.
- Final chatbot project: Demonstrate a focused assistant, document its knowledge sources and improve it after a structured test.
Practical assignments
Write a conversation map, prepare a small FAQ knowledge base and build a prototype. Create at least 20 test questions, including ambiguous and out-of-scope requests, then record improvements.
Final project
A demo FAQ/support chatbot for a fictional academy or business, with a curated knowledge base, useful source references, fallback replies, a human-handoff plan, a 20-question test report and setup documentation.
